Does Starbucks comply with the UC San Diego Fair Trade policy?
Yes, University Centers Starbucks adheres to the Fair Trade policy. Starbucks purchases coffee that is Fair Trade Certified or C.A.F.E. Practices verified. Their commitment to purchasing sustainably sourced coffee and tea is well documented in its Global Responsibility Report.

What is C.A.F.E Practices?
It is one of the coffee industry’s first comprehensive set of sustainability standards, verified by third-party experts. The scorecards include more than 200 social, economic and environmental criteria. Conservation International and Starbucks worked together to launch Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E) Practices in 2004.

Conservation International’s C.A.F.E. Practices is independently audited by the same organization which audits the Fair Trade USA program, SCS Global Services. In 2012/13 the UC San Diego Fair Trade Committee conscientiously voted to include this verification system based on the merits and efficacy of its criteria.

How does the C.A.F.E Practices program benefit local farmers?
Starbucks pays a premium for its coffee. These premiums are paid to farmers, cooperatives and other organizations that positively impact the lives and livelihoods of coffee farmers and their communities. This is a holistic model which includes: responsible purchasing practices; farmer support; economic, social and environmental standards for suppliers; industry collaboration; and community development programs.
